Children’s books publishers from developing book markets can apply now!

The Frankfurter Buchmesse Invitation Programme allows 20 publishers from developing book markets to present themselves and to engage in international networking at Frankfurter Buchmesse (14-18 October 2020). The programme, taking place on 8-18 October 2020 in Frankfurt, is aimed at small, independent publishers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Arab world and Eastern Europe. This year’s programme will put children’s publishing into focus, encouraging children’s book publishers from developing book markets to apply. Candidates for the programme should have a good level of English; the application deadline is 30 April.

The carefully selected guests receive a free stand at the book fair, and their travel and accommodation costs are covered. Before the fair begins, programme participants take part in a two-and-a-half-day seminar. The programme is funded by Frankfurter Buchmesse and the German Federal Foreign Office.

Deborah Ahenkorah, CEO and publisher of African Bureau Stories (Ghana) and participant in the 2019 Invitation Programme, says: “Being part of the Invitation Programme was a real eye opener and gave me an inside look into how the business of international publishing works. The programme opened the door wide to massive opportunities for a small publisher like us to play in the big leagues – what a rewarding experience!”

WORLD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AFTER COVID-19
SPREADING POSITIVITY THROUGH BOOKS IN TOUGH TIMES

We have glanced upon many social media posts and it is evident that the there is a lot of positivity around and people are in some way or the other fighting this with unity.
We have also been able to see some posts asking will the world be normal again once this is all over and will we be able lead our lives back into which seemed a reality few days ago. The truth is we are neither sure and nor can we picture things being functional or similar as before. It seems that we all have been finding ways to survive these catastrophic times. And what better can it be than books which are indeed a break from reality which help us spend few surreal moments as we dive deep into them.

We noticed few publishing houses coming up with online campaigns involving books.

To aid social distancing and self isolation, Juggernaut Books India along with Scroll.in launched a month long campaign and literature festival starting 27th March 2020, called #ReadInstead. This digital campaign includes talks, dialogues, writing workshops and book readings by some of India's leading actors. Chiki Sarkar, Publisher Juggernaut Books India said, "Two weeks ago, in response to national lockdown, Juggernaut launched their #readinstead campaign. We made the app free to outstanding results - with 10-14k organic installs daily and 300% growth in engagement and book downloads. We also launched the country’s largest online literature festival which featured writers like Thomas Piketty, Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Dufflo, William Dalrymple and Rajdeep Sardesai and Barkha Dutt, writers workshops and readings from actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Konkona Sen. This has been a very exciting and highly creative time for us as a company, and the entire company has been agile, energetic and full of ideas and can-do."

Keeping its readers entertained Siyahi, a literary Consultancy, one of the very first literary agencies in India, is going LIVE at 4pm everyday for an hour with their author Devdutt Pattanaik. Bringing mythology to life, this renowned storyteller, mythologist, author, speaker and illustrator narrates stories from Indian, Abrahamic, ancient and modern mythologies in his digital storytelling session "Tea Time Tales with Devdutt Pattanaik". 

Among other initiatives Mita Kapur, CEO, Siyahi said, "Siyahi's effort is to reach readers for our author's books, it's also the time for new readers to explore and discover books they haven't read till now which is why we began a book a day series. Books have always been our window to the world and in times like these, we can still journey into so many new worlds through the books we read. Devdutt Pattanaik's Tea time Tales are also his way to take his readers/viewers back to our mythological tales, epic stories that his books have explored. These are ways of reaffirming and reassuring!
