The 73rd Cannes International Film Festival could not take place in May as planned due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the Marché du Film will take place virtually from 22 to 26 June 2020. The Marché du Film Online is designed to recreate the market place in Cannes, with digital events and virtual meetings that enable participants to network and do business. Together with its partners SCELF (Société Civile des Editeurs de Langue Française) and the Institut Français, Frankfurter Buchmesse is giving 11 publishers and agencies from five countries extra visibility for their books at one of the world's most important film festivals.
The participants in the online version of the Publishers' Tour are Agentur Kroll (Germany), ALT autores Editorial (Spain), Elisabeth Ruge Agentur (Germany), Guernica Editions (Canada), Loewe Verlag (Germany), Oslo Literary Agency (Norway), Ravensburger Verlag (Germany), Rowohlt Agentur für Medienrechte (Germany), S. Fischer Verlag (Germany), The Italian Literary Agency (Italy) and TOKYOPOP (Germany).

IT’S A MATCH! FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE AND THE ARTS+
LAUNCH NEW FORMAT "PITCH YOUR CIP WHERE YOUR CONTENT BECOMES A GAME, A BOOK, A FILM" ON FACEBOOK

© Frankfurter Buchmesse

For over 500 years, Frankfurter Buchmesse has been the most important marketplace for stories, ideas and content. No other place in the world trades in more creative content. With the founding of THE ARTS+, Frankfurter Buchmesse created a future-oriented gateway between publishing and the international creative industry (film/TV, art/museums, music, games, etc.). The focus of THE ARTS+ is also on trading in Creative Intellectual Property; it showcases innovative content, creative business models and technologies such as AI, VR, AR and XR. Perhaps most importantly, THE ARTS+ is the place where international content professionals form new partnerships and make deals.
It is precisely this same focus that THE ARTS+ now wants to reflect with “Pitch your CIP”, by creating a forum for networking.
Participating is easy. Joining the Facebook group "Pitch your CIP" is the first step. The group is aimed at content professionals and businesses that want to (re)market their Creative Intellectual Property and at rights managers, publishing experts, agents, film and games experts, business developers, IT specialists, investors, start-ups, multipliers and influencers. It allows for moderated and guided dialogue between members. Those who wish to pitch creative content themselves can create a short video clip presenting their creative intellectual property and post it personally in the group. The aim is not just to market creative content unilaterally but also to promote professional dialogue between all group members and the development of partnerships.

PUBLISHING AND THE PANDEMIC
ACADEMIC PUBLISHING MUST CHANGE QUICKLY IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC

Indian publishing, which will celebrate 75 years in 2022, has a close and symbiotic relationship with the educational system in India. Some 95% of the industry directly caters to schools, colleges, universities and research – including technical, medical, and professional education. The remaining five percent forms what we call general or trade publishing, the segment that garners eyeballs with its bestselling books, high advances, and celebrity authors.
Even if we put aside the gaps, quality and search-ability of resources, access and connectivity remain big issues, as do language gaps, since the vast majority of such resources are in English. Although resolvable, they require concerted collaboration between academic publishers, authors, and the government that has the platforms to reach learners at all levels, as well as other stakeholders. The World Economic Forum predicts that public-private educational partnerships will grow through learning consortiums and coalitions with diverse stakeholders – governments, publishers, education professionals, technology providers, and telecom operators. This could become a prevalent and consequential trend in future education.
Nitasha Devasar, Managing Director, Taylor and Francis India & South Asia and President, Association of Publishers in India (API) talks about the most pressing issues in this article-
/ Academic publishing and higher education
/ Content and experts matter, not formats
/ Learning online and access
/ Still not a print versus digital debate
/ Research and content
/ Cues for academic publishing
/ The post-pandemic future
She further adds, "If we enter the post-Covid-19 world with a spirit of collaboration rather than individualism and work as partners to reprioritise, reinvent, shape and structure ourselves to our needs, we will see readers on the other side, to celebrate the resilience of Indian publishing."

BOOKWIRE’S ‘ALL ABOUT AUDIO: PODCASTS, AUDIOBOOKS
25-PERCENT AUDIOBOOK GROWTH IN 2020

Bookwire GmbH, one of the leading international digital publishing technology companies, presented a new digital audio publishing conference for international audiences on Wednesday June 24th: All About Audio – Digital Audio Summit for Publishers. Bookwire’s All About Audio conference examines facets of growth in audiobooks with specialists on what’s working and what’s next. The Bookwire program hosted by its audio lead, Videl Bar-Kar and presented in association with DPR, Steffen Meier’s Digital Publishing Report—made the most of the all-in-one-sitting approach. In its online program on the state and prospects for audio publishers and other players in the world industry, the mood was upbeat, the presentations ran smoothly, and the audience was offered a lot to think about: Keep in mind that podcasting is relatively easy to accomplish and open to all, compared to the demands of top-grade professional audiobook production, of course.

One of the speakers from the conference, Helena Gustafsson from Storytel, digital subscription service that streams audiobooks, lists four qualities that succeed in audio:

/ Good storytelling, of course
/ Exclusivity, as in Storytel Originals content
/ Personalization, as in consumer research
/ Curation, for algorithmic recommendation
Taking both audiobooks and podcasting together, the Bookwire ‘All About Audio’ program was a multifaceted tour of the issues with a final message to publishers: Streaming is inevitable.
