Running through the duration of Frankfurter Buchmesse, you can experience almost anything at BOOKFEST – except boredom. Nowhere else does the entire industry meet its customers so directly.
Even if some things are new and different this year: what remains is a great programme full of culture, inspiration and exciting encounters.

This year, Frankfurter Buchmesse's BOOKFEST will take place physically as BOOKFEST city and, for the first time, also virtually as BOOKFEST digital. In the case of BOOKFEST city, the events are spread over all five days of the fair, across many locations throughout Frankfurt. The all-new BOOKFEST digital offers a unique, virtual celebration of literature and culture on the Saturday of the fair, which is broadcast live worldwide.

PUBLISHING AND THE PANDEMIC
BÖRSENVEREIN REPORT ON THE GERMAN BOOK MARKET

A new report on the German publishing industry focuses on effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in continental Europe’s largest book market.
Germany “has withstood the pandemic better than other big European countries, recording fewer COVID-19 deaths,” writes Reuters’ Joseph Nasr, “and its economy has been relatively resilient during more than six weeks of lockdown owing to generous stimulus packages and a decision to keep open factories and construction sites. But data showing that industrial orders had risen by a record 10.4 percent during a month when restrictions were gradually lifted, almost a third less than forecast in a Reuters poll, dashed hopes of a quick return to pre-crisis business activity.”
“In order to continue making a contribution to society in the future, books need two things above all: visibility and a stronger framework of stable conditions. The discussion about books must become broader and louder; particularly in the media and especially in public broadcasting. In addition, we need strong copyright law and publishers must again be included in the distributions of the copyright collecting societies as soon as possible. We appeal to the Federal Government to finally make good on its promise and quickly introduce a legal regulation on this issue.”

PUBLISHING AND THE PANDEMIC
AUTHORS IN THE CORONA VIRUS CRISIS:THE EUROPEAN WRITERS' COUNCIL REPORT

Markets reporting ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ severe pandemic impact on writers and translators include Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and Norway. Image: European Writers’ Council

While harder to gauge than some sectors of the world industry, the pressures faced by writers and translators in the European markets are quantified in a survey responded to by 33 organizations in 24 countries. In terms of the impact of the corona virus COVID-19 pandemic on the world publishing industry, one of the hardest sectors to see into is the authors’ experience.
This has to do with both the nature of authors’ position in the supply chain and with the individual-vendor status of their work.
Book publishing is unlike many industries in that its fundamental product, the writing, is not, for the most part, an in-house commodity. Publishers wait for their next new bestselling authors to arrive on no known date, writing about no pre-arranged topic, and in many if not most cases as people previously unknown. A Nielsen- or NPD-style point-of-sales tracking system of each authors’ progress is impractical. The rankings of book sales on retail platforms like Amazon can offer only clues to how titles are navigating a bottomless marketplace of millions of books.
The Economic Impact of COVID-19 on Writers and Translators in the European Book Sector 2020 (PDF) is probably the most comprehensive and detailed study to date in the European arena of how responding writers and translators say they’re being affected.
